My grandma was a very religious person. She always kept a bible by her bed, and she attended church every Sunday. Someone who did not know her as well as I did would probably call her fanatic, but she was far from that; in my eyes, she was just the kindest person I ever had the pleasure of knowing.

It therefore saddened me when I received the news that she would depart from this world in a couple of months. She was hospitalised, and remained bedridden for the remainder of her life. I was heartbroken, and cried for what felt like weeks.

After reaching a reluctant form of acceptance, I decided not to squander my time; I visited her every day from that point forward. She would always be in a good mood, despite her dwindling health. If she had enough strength, she would indulge me in either of her two favourite pastimes; playing cards, or reading the bible for me.

This would carry on for a good couple of months, and by then I was both convinced and relieved to know that whoever this “God”-character is, he would take good care of my grandmother for me. I sat by her side, understanding that sooner or later her line would go flat, and her body would seize to move. I had fully come to terms with the prospect. I was happy.

The day was coming to an end, and I was still keeping my grandmother company. Her life was slowly slipping away, as she seemed to become more and more delirious by the minute. She claimed that the ceiling opened up, and that the clouds parted for her, and her alone. Occasionally she would look back at me, as if to ask: “Can’t you see this miracle, child?” I could do nothing but smile at what might be going on in her head at that moment.

But then… her smile turned into a confused frown. As she looked at the “clouds”, a look of abject horror appeared on her face, along with a colour so pale that “white” was not good enough to describe it. She remained breathless for a good minute…

And then she let out a bloodcurdling scream; one of which I had never heard from her before. She started wailing her hands in the air, yelling: “NO! OH GOD NO!” Her body entered an uncontrollable, epilepsy-like state, and her speech slowly turned into a series of garbled nonsense.

Hospital personnel came to her aid, but it was all for nought; she passed away. What would have been a peaceful and painless death, suddenly turned into a terrifying demise.

Like I said, her reaction could be chalked up to delirium, but I somehow doubt that. Either way, it made me think. More often than not will you find me looking up into the sky…

And wonder about what kind of God we’re worshipping…
